Djinung Maat

Albany is known for its stunning landscapes, rich Aboriginal culture, and vibrant multicultural community. This project aims to create an exceptional pathway, the Djinung Maat (looking out pathway), from Yirrirup/Mt Adelaide to Binalup/Middleton Beach. The pathway will feature boardwalk construction adorned with Menang artwork, engaging visitors and providing guided walks and cultural teaching programs as part of the proposed Botanic Garden on Yirrirup/Mt Adelaide.

The Djinung Maat is a two-stage initiative spanning five years, contributing to the City of Albany’s Kinjarling Connect Project. The first stage, lasting two and a half years, will link Yirrirup/Mt Adelaide’s summit to Binalup/Middleton Beach, prioritising the protection of important Noongar men’s business grounds near the lookout.

Stage 2, pending funding through 2029, will extend the walkway from the ANZAC Centre to the summit, traversing bushland and historic WWII gun emplacements, highlighting Albany’s significant role during the war.

Additionally, the project will include Noongar-led cultural heritage yarning sessions and walks during Stage 1, along with a distinguished lecture series from UWA, acknowledging Western Australia’s first bicentenary.
