Binalup, Menang | First Light, First People
A Menang-led collaboration between Elders and award-winning portrait photographer Nic Duncan, shining a light on the positive contributions the Menang people have made, and continue to make in the Albany community. A series of 30 portraits of Elders and emerging leaders will be exhibited at the Albany Town Hall to coincide with NAIDOC Week 2026.
Conversations with those featured will be recorded and captions written telling the subjects’ stories/contributions to the City, with Elders visiting schools, engaging students in conversations about the portraits and the rich history of the Menang people.
Menang Elder, Aunty Carol Pettersen says the project will “highlight the contributions of our First Nations people in shaping the community we have today, telling our story in a way that builds pride and confidence in our youth while fostering mutual respect and collaboration.” Uncle Lester Coyne adds, “With 'Albany 2026' marking the bicentenary, it’s important that First Nations Peoples, the land’s original inhabitants, are acknowledged. Many of our Elders are ‘quiet achievers,’ so this is a wonderful way to recognize them publicly.”
This meaningful project will leave a lasting legacy, ensuring the images and stories of the Menang people are recognised, celebrated, and shared with future generations.
