About the Event
Albany artist Renée Tan invites audiences into A World Without Borders, an intricate exploration of storytelling, humanity and the transformative possibilities of paper.
Working predominantly with paper, Tan creates meticulously hand-cut, folded and threaded artworks that reveal extraordinary detail through a process of patience, persistence and curiosity. Self-taught and inspired by her mixed East and Southeast Asian heritage, as well as her life in the coastal city of Albany on Menang Noongar Boodja, Tan’s practice explores the diversity of human experience and the connections that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.
For Tan, the act of making is both an intellectual and deeply contemplative process. Each sheet of paper offers the potential for transformation, and through painstaking craftsmanship she seeks to elevate the material to its fullest expression of beauty and perfection. Her works invite viewers to slow down, look closely and consider the relationship between fragility and strength, individuality and connection.
A World Without Borders celebrates the universal language of creativity and the capacity of art to sharpen our senses, expand our understanding and bring us closer to one another. Through delicate, labour-intensive paper works, Tan reflects on a world in which beauty, imagination and human connection can move beyond borders.

A World Without Borders is on display from Saturday 26 September to Tuesday 20 October 2026, as part of the Southern Art & Craft Trail 2026 (this is venue 32). Gallery open 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.
