About the Event

Diamond of the Desert: Exploring a true history of WA through a fictional lens, is a recently published historical-fiction novel that explores the formative years of the new Colony of Western Australia. It is unique as the first and only WA fiction to relay a comprehensive and accurate history 'warts and all' - including the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal people and nations across the state.

The genesis of this book lies in the actual experience of the author's own ancestors in the colony's formative decades, and pivots around the revelation of a family secret kept silent for four generations. The story draws on actual letters and newspaper articles throughout, giving readers the opportunity to re-live WA's history again through the shared experiences of its characters.

Attendees to this presentation will gain a detailed understanding of precursor conditions in England, Ireland and in the new Swan Colony, together with a deeper insight to the life of the pioneer and Aboriginal relations.

As the state commemorates 200-year bicentenary events, David's presentation seeks to present a pathway to reconciliation through truth-telling, connection and a better understanding of our shared past.
