About the Event

Albany’s Historic Whaling Station presents Cats & Dogs: All at Sea, a captivating photographic exhibition exploring the often-overlooked role of animals aboard seafaring vessels.

Originally developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, this touring exhibition has been reinterpreted and presented to create a unique experience.

Featuring early 20th-century photographs by photographer Samuel Hood, the exhibition captures sailors alongside their animal companions – cats, dogs, and other shipboard pets – who not only had practical use but provided comfort, companionship, and a vital emotional connection during long voyages far from home.

These intimate portraits reveal a deeply human side of maritime life, where animals were far more than mascots; they were trusted companions in an otherwise isolated world.

Cats & Dogs: All at Sea is a free exhibition that invites visitors to experience these quiet, heartfelt moments.
