About the Event

First contact. First fences. First farms.
Now, learn the First Nations story of Strawberry Hill at Barmup—a site of immense cultural significance, disrupted by British colonisation.

You're invited to experience Mapping Menang, a Menang community-led project that uncovers deeply held stories of family, Country, and connection—stories that have endured despite the impacts of settlement.

Bringing together oral histories, intergenerational knowledge, and archival research, the artworks created through Mapping Menang reveal a richly layered past. For countless generations, the Menang people cared for and thrived on this land—long before it became the first European farm in Western Australia. These works highlight stories of survival and resistance, as well as the lasting imposition of colonial systems that forever changed the landscape and lives of its Traditional Custodians.

The backdrop for the Mapping Menang experience will be a transformed Strawberry Hill at Barmup—enhanced by major works funded by the State Government and due for completion in early 2026. Site infrastructure will be vastly improved, conservation of historic 1830s buildings completed, and new landscaping introduced to reflect and honour the enduring presence of the Menang people on this land for thousands of years.
