The 2026 Great Southern Volunteer of the Year Award could hardly have come in a more fitting year for Albany Historical Society CEO Andrew Eyden.
As Albany marks its bicentenary year, Andrew’s recognition shines a light on the volunteers helping preserve and share the city’s rich and complex history for future generations.
Announced at the Great Southern Volunteer Awards Gala during National Volunteer Week celebrations, Andrew was recognised for his tireless work preserving and sharing Albany’s history.
Alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, Andrew helps manage some of Albany’s most treasured heritage places including the Old Gaol Museum, Patrick Taylor Cottage Museum and Duke Street Park.
Scott Leary MLA acknowledged Andrew and the team following the award.
“They work tirelessly to preserve and advocate for Albany's history and its buildings that have relevance to the people who shaped Albany,” he said.
“It is not only a win for Andrew but all his wonderful staff who welcome thousands of tourists each year to share in Albany's history.”
For Andrew, the award was both unexpected and deeply humbling.
“I had been informed I’d been nominated for the Great Southern Volunteer of the Year, but I never imagined for a moment I would be chosen to win the 2026 award,” he shared in a post following the gala.
Andrew dedicated the award to the volunteers who support the Albany Historical Society and the wider community.
“You inspire me every day and I’m proud to lead such a wonderful team,” he said.
“Without you, we simply couldn’t exist.”
As Albany marks 2026, a year reflecting on 200 years of shared history, there has never been a better time to step through the doors of the Old Gaol Museum, wander through Patrick Taylor Cottage or explore Duke Street Park.
Behind every carefully preserved room, every guided tour and every story shared with visitors is a passionate group of volunteers helping ensure Albany’s history remains alive for future generations.
Hosted by Albany & Regional Volunteer Service at the Albany Entertainment Centre, the Volunteer Awards Gala brought together guests to celebrate the outstanding contribution volunteers make across the Great Southern region.
