Albany welcomes first State-ranking badminton tournament

For the first time, a State-ranking badminton event is being played in the Great Southern, with more than 160 players heading to town to compete for a share of the $22,000 prize pool.

Among them is Olympian Setyana Mapasa, who represented Australia in women’s doubles at both Tokyo and Paris. She’ll be joined by many other top-ranked players from across Western Australia and beyond.

The tournament takes place at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre on February 28 and March 1, featuring singles, doubles and mixed competitions across seniors and juniors in a variety of grades.

Albany 2026 Coordinator Adam Gregory said the event would draw players and visitors to the region for a weekend of high-level competition and community connection.

“This tournament is set to be a fantastic showcase of Albany, bringing players and visitors from across Western Australia and even nationally to our city for a long weekend of sport, connection and community.”

The City of Albany is proud to sponsor the Albany Bicentenary Badminton Tournament, as part of the Albany 2026 program, by providing the venue free of charge and contributing $5,000 in cash sponsorship through Regional Event Sponsorship.

The event is open to spectators, with community members encouraged to attend and witness some of the State’s top badminton players in action.
