Community Leads the Way

The City of Albany is proud to support 15 diverse, community-led events as part of Albany 2026. From public art and photography to academic reflection and shared meals, these projects reflect the creativity, culture, and spirit of our region, offering something for everyone throughout the year.

One highlight is Binalup Menang | First Light, First People, presented by Albany 2026 Ambassador, Aunty Carol Pettersen and acclaimed photographer Nic Duncan. This Menang-led project will capture the portraits and stories of Menang Elders, culminating in a powerful exhibition at the Albany Town Hall from 26 June to 25 July 2026.

As part of the project, budding Noongar photographers will be mentored by Nic Duncan, developing their portraiture skills while documenting Elders’ stories. These images and accounts will form a valuable record of Menang culture, celebrating the wisdom, resilience, and leadership of Elders who continue to shape Albany’s identity.

Aunty Carol Pettersen says the project will “highlight the contributions of our First Nations people in shaping the community we have today, telling our story in a way that builds pride and confidence in our youth while fostering mutual respect and collaboration.” Uncle Lester Coyne adds, “With Albany 2026 marking the bicentenary, it’s important that First Nations Peoples, the land’s original inhabitants, are acknowledged. Many of our Elders are ‘quiet achievers,’ so this is a wonderful way to recognize them publicly.”
