As night falls over Albany in March 2026, the city will transform into a breathtaking canvas of light. Over three weekends (March 13–15, 20–22, and 27–29), Lighting the Sound will illuminate Albany’s hills and coastline in the largest light installation ever staged on Earth.
Finnish artist Kari Kola, renowned for lighting landmarks like Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower, brings his artistry to Australia for the first time. Inspired by Albany’s landscapes and the Menang plant (Bloodroot), Kola’s work reflects themes of resilience, reconciliation and connection to the land.
Thousands of hectares around King George Sound will glow, creating a vast tapestry of light. Key vantage points around the Albany townsite will offer unique perspectives, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in this extraordinary experience.
Lighting the Sound is initiated and produced by FORM Building a State of Creativity. Lotterywest is a Major Supporter of the City of Albany’s Albany 2026 Program. Lighting the Sound is proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism WA.
