One of the largest performative gatherings in Western Australia will take place in November 2026, with expressions of interest open for free lantern making workshops as part of Carrying the Fire.
Presented as part of Albany 2026, Carrying the Fire will invite Albany residents and visitors of all ages to hold a lamp and walk as one along the coast in the heart of Albany.
Along the way, lamp-bearers will pause to form a string of lights, becoming part of an enormous ephemeral artwork to be captured from above and shared with audiences around the world.
Southern Edge Arts is inviting community groups, businesses, schools, and sporting clubs to register their interest in hosting free lantern making workshops led by a team of artists.
Southern Edge Arts Artistic Director Annette Carmichael says the workshops will be adapted for all ages and abilities, and participants will create their own lantern to carry on the day.
“Our team of artists will facilitate an inspiring experience for groups of up to 30 people,” she said.
“Local artists have designed a range of lanterns that are inspired by our stunning natural world and celebrate the resilient banksia, the regenerative sea star, the warmth of a Kornt (home) and the spiritual Moodja (Christmas) flower.
“There are simple designs for children and more intricate designs for those that want a challenge”.
Local artists, arts teachers and community leaders are also encouraged to register for a professional development workshop. This session will equip participants with the skills and materials to lead their own lantern making workshops and take part in the final event.
Albany 2026 Coordinator Adam Gregory said Carrying the Fire would offer a powerful opportunity for people to participate in one of the program’s most ambitious events.
“This is an invitation for the whole community to take part in something truly special,” Mr Gregory said.
“Through these workshops, people can create their own lantern, walk alongside others and quite literally become part of the artwork. It’s about coming together and looking ahead, as one community.”
Carrying the Fire is presented by FORM Building a State of Creativity in collaboration with Creative Producer Southern Edge Arts and Artistic Director Annette Carmichael.
Lotterywest is the Major Supporter of Albany 2026 Major Events, including Carrying the Fire.
