The voices, stories and lived experiences of Kinjarling/Albany have been brought together in a powerful new digital experience, with the launch of Albany Is.
Presented by FORM and produced by Envelope Audio and Barking Wolf as part of the Albany 2026 program, Albany Is is an immersive audio experience drawing on interviews with more than 170 Albany locals.
The free app invites people to move through Kinjarling/Albany guided by the voices of those who know it best, revealing the history, culture and character of the region through the people who live it.
More than 130 voices feature directly in the experience, including Menang Elders, post-war migrants, pharmacists, fishermen, lighthouse keepers' wives, poets, skaters, and teenagers, with stories from the remaining interviews woven into the maps that guide each journey.
Together, they explore themes of Country, migration, industry, environmental restoration, identity, belonging and community, weaving hundreds of experiences into a lasting legacy for Albany 2026.
Mayor Greg Stocks said Albany Is celebrated the richness and diversity of the community.
"Albany Is captures the stories, memories and perspectives that shape our community. Whether you have lived here all your life or visiting for the first time, it invites you to discover Kinjarling/Albany through the eyes of the people who call it home.” Mayor Stocks said.
FORM Manager of Cultural Tourism John Clark said the project reflected Albany’s unique voices.
"We're proud to present a project that puts the people of Kinjarling/Albany at its centre. Every story has been shared generously and every voice treated with respect, creating something that belongs to the whole community." Mr Clark said.
Envelope Audio Creative Director Josh Hogan said the project was designed to create a deeply personal connection between people and place.
"Rather than telling a single history of Albany, Albany Is invites people to experience hundreds of individual stories that together create a rich and evolving portrait of the region. Every listener will hear this place, and perhaps their own community, in a new way.” Mr Hogan said.
The free app is available to download now with seven stories to explore, with the remaining three stories released fortnightly. A dedicated listening booth will be located at Albany Public Library for six weeks from 7 August 2026. For more information, visit form.net.au/albany-is.
