The month also recognised two remarkable contributors to Albany's story. Albany Historical Society CEO Andrew Eyden was named the 2026 Great Southern Volunteer of the Year, and former Mayor Dennis Wellington was bestowed the title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Albany in recognition of his exceptional leadership and lasting contribution to the community, including the pivotal role he played in shaping the vision for Albany 2026.

May showcased the diversity of the Albany 2026 program, with community events spanning arts, music, motorsport, remembrance and reconciliation.
Supported by the City of Albany as part of the Albany 2026 program, KAARLA WIRREN brought together Menang storytelling, fire performance and local young people in a powerful outdoor production that explored resilience, culture and community.
Also supported through Albany 2026, Imagine Songwriting Live showcased original songs inspired by Albany's landscapes, history and people, with WAAPA students and local musicians celebrating the region through music and storytelling.
Across National Reconciliation Week, a series of events encouraged learning, truth-telling and meaningful connection, while the United States Submariners Memorial Service honoured Albany's important role in the Second World War. The streets of the CBD also came alive as the Camtrans Albany Classic "Around the Houses" celebrated its 90th anniversary with another spectacular display of historic motorsport.


KAARLA WIRREN (Fire Spirit)
KAARLA WIRREN brought together powerful storytelling, fire performance and community collaboration in a moving outdoor production at Albany's Historic Whaling Station.
Conceived by respected Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen and presented by Southern Edge Arts with Noongar Associate Director Rachael Colmer, the performance explored resilience, connection and the impact of historic change. Set beneath the stars in the natural amphitheatre, the production featured spectacular fire artistry alongside a cast of local young people who had spent six months developing the work through workshops and rehearsals.
Audiences gathered around the symbolic presence of fire to experience a deeply reflective performance that celebrated the enduring strength of culture, the importance of community, and the shared stories that continue to shape Albany's future.

US Submariners Memorial Service – 50th Anniversary
The United States Submariners Memorial Service marked the 50th anniversary of this important annual commemoration, honouring the United States submariners who operated from the Port of Albany during the Second World War.
The service brought the community together to recognise the vital role Albany and Australia played on the home front during the war, paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who served. Through reflection and remembrance, the ceremony reinforced the enduring connection between Albany and its wartime history.
Marking five decades of the memorial tradition, the event ensured the legacy of the United States submariners and Albany's wartime contribution continued to be remembered and shared with future generations.

National Reconciliation Week Breakfast and Great Southern Place-based Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Launch
The National Reconciliation Week Breakfast brought the Albany community together for a morning of truth-telling, reflection and connection as Western Australia entered its 2026–2029 bicentennial period, and was followed by the launch of the Great Southern Place-Based RAP – the first of its kind in Australia.
Hosted by Reconciliation WA and shaped through partnerships with Minang / Goreng Traditional Elders, the City of Albany and community stakeholders, the event centred First Nations leadership, cultural authority and local voices.

Albany 2026 advocate Dennis Wellington named Honorary Freeman
Former Mayor Dennis Wellington was named an Honorary Freeman of the City of Albany in May, recognising his extraordinary contribution to the community and enduring impact on the future of Albany.
Mr Wellington played a significant role in shaping Council’s vision for Albany 2026, helping lay the foundations for the year-long program designed to bringing the community together through arts, culture, reflection and storytelling.

Andrew Eyden awarded 2026 Great Southern Volunteer of the Year
The 2026 Great Southern Volunteer of the Year Award could hardly have come in a more fitting year for Albany Historical Society CEO Andrew Eyden.
As Albany marks its bicentenary year, Andrew’s recognition shone a light on the volunteers helping preserve and share the city’s rich and complex history for future generations.
Announced at the Great Southern Volunteer Awards Gala during National Volunteer Week celebrations in May, Andrew was recognised for his tireless work preserving and sharing Albany’s history.
